Review on πŸ“» Black TYT TH-9800 Cross-Band Mobile Car Ham Radio - Quad Band, 50W by Madison Dickinson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

This is an FCC compliant version - no GMRS, MURS or FRS

WARNING: I have two of these radios, one was purchased 2 years ago. I think these are great radios for the price. I ended up buying two. So let's start by saying that the rating is due to a significant change in the walkie-talkie's capabilities and not a word about it in the description. I understand why this is happening (FCC) but they need to let us know when. I programmed both radios with VHF and UHF repeaters and GMRS, MURS and FRS frequencies. I can hear all channels/frequencies. However when I transmit I get a loud beep and the display shows "ERROR" when I press PTT on any frequency that is MURS, FRS or GMRS. This also applies to GMRS repeaters. On the older model TYT-9800, the same frequencies are transmitted well. Therefore, this radio does not allow transmission on GMRS, MURS or FRS. Therefore, you MUST have a Technician Ham Radio License to communicate with others. Also, others must also be licensed to talk to you as you only do so on HAM's ham radio frequencies. Edit: There are ways to solve this problem. You MUST install the vendor's software and read all instructions. After that you can use Chirp, but first you need to set up this radio properly. Rating updated.
