Review on ๐Ÿ“ท SiOnyx Aurora PRO Night Vision Sports and Action Camera: Enhanced Performance Package with Manufacturer Accessories and Hard Case by Bre Marie

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not a bad device, but some misleading ads and insufficient features.

So I bought it for boating as I often go boating at night. Before I came across SiOnyx, I was considering buying FLIR, but the high initial cost kept me waiting. Since FLIR is grayscale and SiOnyx is "color" I thought I had found the perfect night vision alternative with low cost and the ability to see navaids. Benefits1. Colour. When boating, this is a must because the color of the navigation aids and the color of the boat lights are important.2. price target. It's top-of-the-line at $1,000, making it affordable for most buyers.3. Portability. I can switch to other boats, choose locations (more on that later), and hide to minimize theft.4. Functionality off the boat. I can use it as a camera or camcorder.5. Transfer the image to a WiFi-enabled device via WiFi. No wiring. Big plus minuses1. While there is an Invert Image setting, it ONLY inverts the menu, not the actual image. I contacted Sionyx about this. Your decision? Disable the automatic rotation and rotation of the tablet. Okay, great if you're using a tablet. When sending a signal to a flat panel display mounted on a boat, do not turn the boat over. So you need to install it right side up, you can't install it upside down from the ceiling.2. I had numerous camera dropouts. Sionyx is aware of this and their solution is to put your device in airplane mode and ONLY turn on Wi-Fi. This solved the Sionyx issue, but maybe you think I'm running another wireless device from my tablet? Yes I do.3. I wanted to display my navigation app and the Aurora Pro image in a split screen view on my tablet. So I went to set it up, added my sat nav app, added the Sionyx app and you know what? No Siontx app. This is not compatible with split screen on Android. Are you kidding? 4. Lots of variability and lag in the picture. Sionyx suggests the following: Reduce the framerate to 30fps. Okay, but what if your camera can't stream smoothly at maximum frame rate? Why do you even offer this option? I suspected the lag and stuttering was due to CPU load while running other applications. I bought an identical tablet, uninstalled all non-essential apps and ONLY ran Sionyx on it. It was smooth S.5. Misleading Advertising. I bought the Pro because it was the only model advertised as "Moonless Nights". NOT CORRECT. On a moonless night, it cannot display a usable image. Significant noise. Sionyx's solution, when did I contact them about this? Buy their IR illuminator for $250. Well, if I need an IR illuminator, I guess it's not for moonless nights, right? I could buy an Aurora AND an IR illuminator for about the same price as an Aurora Pro.6. Colour. As you can see from the photos, a patch of green is clearly visible on a nearly moonless night. Sionyx will tell you this is normal. Okay I guess it's not misleading as it's color night vision. It's just that the colors may not correspond to reality. The good news is greed and the red light did show up correctly. Summary Overall this is a ground colored night vision scope designed for use on land and can be used for boating. This is NOT a color night vision scope for marine use, period. It lacks key design features unique to marine use, such as B. inverting images for persistent flat panel displays, ability to work well with other running applications, and ability to work well with other wireless devices. While it does have its downsides, if you use the workarounds above, e.g. B. using a dedicated tablet, it adds value to my nighttime safety at sea.
