Great for removing the water heater anode with an impact wrench

The anode in my Rheem Performance 50 Gallon is 6 years, a warranty period linked to the life of the anode by the manufacturer. The anode in this particular water heater, XG50T06EC38U1, is recessed below the surface of the top and the countersunk hole that houses it is too small for the impact socket. There are thin wall HD impact and non-impact heads that will work, but they cost at least twice as much as this one. Note that 27mm is only 4 ten-thousandths of an inch larger than 1-1/16 inch, so size doesn't matter. Like most anodes, mine stuck very hard to the point where it wouldn't budge after being hit at full force with a heavy-duty impact wrench. I sprayed with Aerocroil and allowed to creep for 12 hours (while cleaning the WH with vinegar), then pounded clockwise (tighten) once and counterclockwise (loosen) a few times until the anode finally broke off and twisted out. The socket was undamaged, as was the head on the anode, so it was excellent for the job. I don't recommend it for everyday use as a impact socket, but the steel, hardness and finish of this head are excellent quality.

Pros
  • Hand tool
Cons
  • Good but not great
