Very hard. The outside of the seal is made of hard material and the inside around the VCT is made of rubber. You can install this by taking the gasket and placing it correctly where it needs to be and tapping it lightly with a hammer until it's fully seated. If you don't have room for a hammer, you can use an extension cord. BEWARE. You do NOT want a screwdriver to get near this part as you risk piercing the soft rubber material inside and causing an air/oil leak.
