I have a feeling many people expect all furniture to be solid wood even if they pay less than a dollar. The sides and back of this thin chipboard material, but you can't tell when it's together. Dark wood almost always looks high-quality from a distance, and this is also the case here. We have an almost 3 year old who plays with him every day and he's doing great so far. By the way, we've had him for a few months. We have a 39" Vizio LCD TV on the top shelf and it fits perfectly. It probably won't be bigger than your TV. We have our Xbox 360, Wii (lying horizontally) and modem on the top shelf. and downstairs, behind the door, is our DVD player, remotes and controllers, cables, etc. It's just under two feet tall, but puts our TV at about eye level when we sit on our furniture to watch it for ourselves it was just what we needed. We might replace it later if we could afford something bigger, but we'll still use it somewhere in our house because we really like it.
