Review on ๐Ÿ”‹ Extreme Operation Autowit SuperCap Battery-less Solution by Shawn Xayamonty

Best launcher for cold climates

I'll start this review by saying that I have both this Autowit launcher and their previous model. So I can compare them well. You may have seen this product on the popular YouTube channel and while it doesn't come out on top, I'll explain why this technology is right for me. I live in the subarctic, where extremely low winter temperatures are the norm, not the exception. The problem with battery launchers in cold climates is that the battery will not hold a charge if left in a car in freezing temperatures for weeks or months. These capacitor-based systems are essentially immune to this problem since you charge them when you want to use them, and there's no battery chemistry involved either. Conceptually, this device takes the remaining energy from your undercharged battery - and releases it all at once. , which allows you to quickly start installing. It suffers from very weak batteries, but it really takes longer to charge. While it's true that it won't charge from a truly "dead" battery, it really is the best charging app out there anyway. However, you can use a DC accessory to connect it to an alternate power source (another battery, USB or cigarette lighter adapter) and run a truly dead battery. and I didn't start the car. In fact, I put my old Autowit through this exercise repeatedly, down to -46F. I was happy to purchase this updated model for my second car as it has proven to be such a useful and versatile tool for getting through the harsh winters. I've tried this new one a few times and expect it to do the same as the old model. For me such a tool should always work (and not only in good weather) and it fits perfectly. This device has some differences and "upgrades" compared to the old version. First, the connector cover is a nice rubber insert that handles cold temperatures much better than the (now rock hard) plastic insert they used before. The display is nice and shows battery voltage and general status indicators. The buttons on this device are a little clearer and there are no more "on" buttons, it works when the battery is connected. Most importantly, the device gives you beeps that let you know exactly when to start your car. This feature is completely absent from the old version, meaning it was kind of a guessing game trying to get your installation to work. I also really appreciated the storage box that came with it. What's happening? Very few in my opinion, most of my criticisms have been corrected in this updated model. If I had to pick one thing, it's that the beeper isn't loud enough. It's really hard to hear (even in deafening silence) as the hood often lifts and gets in the way when you need that beep. As for the popular YouTuber reviewing them, their "cold test" really should be a few weeks at -20F or lower as it can be in the real world. A night in the cold is nothing, not even enough for a start to remove the battery. This is one of the few units that fits this scenario. Even if you don't face such challenges, this is still a "survival" version of the jump starter that you can take anywhere and jump almost anywhere. This is a solid set in my book so I have two of these now!

Pros
  • Never requires regular charging
Cons
  • Negligible repairability
