I mainly use them to brush bread with olive oil when making panini or phyllo dough when making spanakopita. They are very suitable for this purpose. I've also used them to coat the chicken with a thicker BBQ sauce and that worked great too. I think they are better than other brushes I've used because the silicone bristles don't fall out like natural bristles. They're also incredibly easy to clean with just a dab of a good degreasing dishwashing liquid (the kind you use for ducks in an oil spill; not sure if brands can be named in this review). I think they would be fine in a top rack dishwasher, but I don't have a dishwasher at the moment so I don't know for sure. But hey, if you melt one of these in the dishwasher, you'll have at least two spare brushes. Bright colors are good too because they're easy to spot in my dish drawer, even if they're small.
