We installed this gate at the bottom of the stairs to keep our 70kg dog from climbing up. It works for that purpose, mainly because our dog knows he shouldn't, and this gate is a reminder of that. Because these goals are made of flexible fabric and have a spring return system, they have excellent compliance. When the lock is not on, our dog putting his front paws on the gate exerts enough pressure to lower the gate enough that he can easily get over it. If we close the gate and she leans on it with her weight, we fear that they will pull so hard on the rails that the hooks are attached to that the rails might break. So we don't usually cage them, we just train our dog not to jump on them (still works). However, we love the minimalist look of the gate and the fact that when we're not using it when the dog isn't around, it can retract into the pole and take up no physical space. It does the job of keeping our dog off the stairs. If I had to choose again I would still choose this gate over other traditional metal gates. But remember that if you have large dogs that love to jump, this won't stop them.
