I have two trailers with backup battery brakes. They're only used 2 or 3 times a year, but I hate devices that don't work 100%. All lines were messed up. The cheap splice connectors were falling apart, the cable insulation was torn, and I had no idea if the battery was good or if the entire system was good. Hence my reason for purchasing the Hopkins 20099 system. The leaky plastic case is the weakest part of the system. This allows water to get in and the plastic mounting tabs will wear out and break over time. Since I have a large tool box on my trailer, I decided to put it in there. It will escape the elements and hopefully extend its lifespan. Instead of using splice connectors, I routed all wiring to the trailer junction box. Any connectors that were outside the box were soldered and wrapped in heat shrink tubing. I'm thinking of adding a solar charging panel to keep the battery charged during periods of non-use.
