These lights use two button cell batteries. Each string comes with a pair already installed.
The strings themselves are very good. There is a switch that turns the string on and off; no remote control, no flashing light, no timer. Button batteries are relatively difficult to replace and expensive. Otherwise these are good lines. However, I wouldn't buy them again. I prefer lamps with a timer that turns the light on for 6 hours and off for 18 hours, and I prefer lamps that do a few "tricks".
