and they've had good luck with the HID line for multiple classes, as long as a few .

We buy and install hundreds of HID readers a year and a few months ago we had great luck with the Multi-Class HID line. We installed in a remote location about 600 miles from our offices. Both readers failed within a few hours of installation, the display sometimes turns blue and the reader becomes unresponsive. We had a lot of current on our reader rails, but we decided to reconnect the readers to an external power supply with more than 2A on the 12V circuit (the reader's specs say it draws a maximum of 145mA). This seemed to work, we got through the install and testing, but within a week both new readers failed again. Our customers could not enter their room, we opened the door for them manually. I called HID expecting a company I've dealt with for years to let me know if there was a problem with the new RP40s, they were very evasive about the problem. As I explained this, I could tell that the technician on the other end knew this was a known issue. He insisted I give him the information on the back of the 600 mile card reader and they check if this is a known issue. They blamed the authorities, they blamed the inspector, but they didn't offer a solution. We dug up some used RP40s and swapped out the card readers, we haven't had any issues since (as before). Since then, these readers have sat useless on our storage shelves. A few months went by, I thought HID had probably "fixed the bug". I ordered another reader and installed it on a completely different controller yesterday, SAME PROBLEM! I'm done, the hardest thing is I need to find a new card reader manufacturer before we check our stock of used card readers.
