I had a huge puncture in the tire and after sealing it with tape I removed it and fixed it permanently with Dynaplug. The hole was too big and I still had to change the tire. However, the Dynaplug is still the most compact and only permanent home installation that you can install yourself. So yes, it's worth it. Steel is much better than aluminum in my opinion and gives a stronger grip.
