We have had several dogs including 4 other Labrador Retrievers and we have always been able to train them to work on a loose leash using only a flat collar. We were on the way to training our current Labrador puppy and he did well on a loose leash until he hit puberty and became a 'teen' at around 5.5 months. He developed a mosquito attention span and a stubbornness/independence that our other dogs didn't have, and every time he saw something he wanted while walking with him on the leash, he'd try to thrash and punch draw. At 57 pounds of solid bone and muscle with all the energy of a puppy, it was a big haul! He was also often distracted and we had to constantly correct him. His snout was 10 inches long at 6 months so we have now ordered both a medium and large size to use later when he is an adult. The medium was perfect for him the day he arrived and we hope he grows to a size large enough to be used effectively. When he arrived we dressed him so he could get used to it. He poked around a lot at first and was able to pull the foundation off (either in his mouth or around his neck) but we just put it back on. After a short time he was lying in it and sleeping, which didn't bother him at all. Then we took him for the first walk on the trail where he had previously behaved but where he started pulling a lot. The gait wasn't perfect, but he quickly learned not to pull, and the end of the gait was much better than the beginning. The results were pretty quick. Now we just have to do a little work to get him back into the correct "heel" position - something he once knew. We're hoping this is just the tool needed to bring him back to what he once knew, so for now we're using both the headgear and his regular flat collar on two different leashes so he gets both signals. . (Yes, this requires some coordination). A flat collar on a separate leash still gives us some control if he manages to detach the strap from his nose while walking. also be wide and comfortable. The design of the collar prevents the noseband from slipping towards the eyes like other brands of dogs do. The dog doesn't mind being dressed or carried around, and once it got used to it, it stopped pawing at it. Customs. As the medium is perfect for our 6 month old, we know he will outgrow the medium soon, but his snout may not grow enough to fit snugly enough to be effective and not easily detach when it gets older
