Review on WD 1TB My Book AV DVR Expander HDD - USB 2.0 - WDBABT0010HBK-NESN by Julius Lito

More than enough size

In April 2014 I bought my first HD TV, a 40 inch Toshiba 40 inch diagonal LED TV. Other than that, I wanted to watch everything in HD, but that requires HD recording. But HD recordings take up a lot more space than SD recordings and it became clear that I was going to fill up my DVR very quickly. For example, if I'm recording a Pirates game, I'll happily record 5 hours in case there are extra innings. But it took up 25% of my DVR. But now with a DVR Expander connected it only takes 3%. Now I can record for fun. It's important because it allows me to record anything that strikes me as interesting, so there's always something to see. So if I'm looking at something and I don't like it or it offends me in any way, I can just delete it and move on to something else. After a little research, I received this WD Expander a week after the TV. . And it works fine. Just a little tip: for some strange reason, you have to connect the eSATA cable to the DVR first and then to the expander during setup. If you do it the other way around, the DVR will not turn on. As for the expander's recording space, my DVR was 41% full before I connected the expander; thereafter it fell to 6%. When it was 33% full, I added up the programming hours I'd written on it, as that would have made the calculation easier. At that point it had 63 hours HD and 24 hours SD. Do the math and it can record around 189 hours in HD and 72 hours in SD for a total of 261 hours of programming. Nobody could see that much. If you can, you must get a life. So the size of this expander should be more than enough for everyone. I have had no problems with this WD DVR expander in the six months since I bought it. Therefore I award five stars. However, I read in these reviews that the eSATA cable that came with the expander wasn't great, so I bought a StarTech 3ft shielded external eSATA cable. So five stars with the cable, not the original.
