I tried 2 methods of popping corn in this thing & here is what I experienced.Method #1 NO oil at all.1. Having no oil/fat takes away from the flavor of the finished popcorn. Seasonings do not stick as well to corn popped without any oil at all.2. Adding the oil or butter afterward would be great if the popcorn stayed hot long enough. I had to cook my kernels in very small batches so.3. I could only cook just under 1 tablespoon of kernels at a time to make sure they all popped without burning. I had to cook 2 batches just to make enough popcorn for myself. By the time I finished, the corn was cold. I only use a little olive oil to pop the corn in other machines but I couldn't add the olive oil after the fact to a cold bowl of popcorn.4. Without any oil at all, my seasonings didn't stick. And I use a very, VERY powdery butter-salt seasoning made just for popcorn.5. Having no oil is great if you are dieting. However, having just a tiny bit of olive oil doesn't add a lot to your calories. A little olive oil can be good for the body.Method #2 Adding just enough oil to coat the kernels & a dash of seasoningBy the way, I was seriously worried about burning the corn or popper. I read reviews of that happening. I have had no problems but I do stay near the machine and listen for when there is no more popping.1. I measured out about 1.5 heaping tablespoons of kernels into the popper and poured about 1.5 teaspoons of oil onto the kernels and stirred to make sure they were all coated.2. The kernels started popping quicker than without oil.3. This time, ALL the kernels popped.4. More of the seasoning stuck but I think I was probably skimping on it with the unpopped kernels, to be honest.5. In my opinion, the popcorn was better cooked - fluffier and had more crunch.6. I think that I can add more kernels in the future - at least the minimum line - since the oil helps all the kernels pop.So, adding the oil helped, I think that the trick was not the amount of oil, but making sure that every kernel gets coated with the oil. I was going to give this bowl 3 stars until I used oil. Now it's much closer to the 5-star rating. In my opinion, I don't think that I could add enough kernels (safely) to pop enough corn at one time to get the bowl anywhere near that full. For one thing, the lid suctions down to keep the kernels at a certain level in the bowl. That's minor now that I am getting most of the kernels to pop.
