Some oddities but a great way to make an IoT device

This board has some really weird features. The first is the most obvious as it is a 3.3V only device which means you will need to use an external power supply for any 5V modules you wish to use with it. The next step is downloading the sketches. Although it works with the Arduino IDE software used on other boards, it requires a bit of tinkering to get it working. Especially if you want to use the serial monitor to view messages from the device. Finally, the printed labels on the board do not match the pin. If you connect to a pin labeled "D0" on the board and want to read an input that you don't read as 0, read 16. Do you want to read "D1"? Is it really pin 5.D2? This is 4.D3. No, it's not a 3. It's a 0. That annoyed me more than anything about this board. Make sure you find a pinout chart when working with this board and keep it handy. It all works well, connecting to my WiFi was a breeze with the included library and I was able to control my Philips Hue lights with this board and the library from Github. Not a bad board for IoT development, but way more frustrating than it should be.

Pros
  • Brilliantly made
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine
