Review on Black Pro Series Rambler Hitch Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4” Receivers - 63155 by Dube Jansen

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Nice rack but doesn't hold up to the advertised load capacity

This Rambler Hitch Pro Series 63155 Rack for 1-1/4" Receivers seems perfect, slim and good quality. till it is We have used this carrier on two long trips (now on our second) I would only have positive things to say about this hitch carrier if it didn't flex significantly when loaded well above its weight limit I'm not sure if it did normal stress of driving on the freeway or if it's the speed bumps we crawl on while visiting grocery stores along the way but now it hangs/sags so low we're having trouble negotiating normal road obstacles we're disappointed with that what should have been a great product I saw other reviews with this issue but dismissed them nt as they indicate that they are overloading the wearer. However, after experiencing the problem firsthand and learning that the weight was way below the weight limit, I was disappointed. Now we drive constantly, trying to pay attention to every bump, curb and hill to avoid scratches or bumps in the trunk of obstacles. If you use it for light loads, this product is great. The factory curved lever raises the trunk for good ground clearance. It's also long enough for our Outback's hatch to open without hitting anything. I would recommend the red reflective tape we used along with a good locking pin (both can be found at Walmart or Revain). Also, the hitch tensioner can come in handy with light loads so it doesn't jump or make excessive noise. For those who doubt our cargo weight, I'll break it down here: A Quart RTIC Roto Cooler and a 7-gallon Reliance Aquatainer, attached to the trunk with tie-down straps and tethers/padlocks. There's food in the fridge and it's filled with ice. The water tank is filled with water. 65 liter cooler = 16.25 gallons Maximum capacity 16.25 gallon cooler + 7 gallon aquatainer = 23.25 gallons 1 gallon of water = 8.34 lbs. The empty aquatainer weighs 2 pounds. The combined weight of containers completely filled with water (theoretically they can be the heaviest, and they never are because large ice cubes are much lighter than water) is less than 240 pounds. The total weight of my hitch cannot exceed 250 pounds including 10 pounds of straps, cables and locks, which is an overestimate. Less than 250lbs should never have flexed this beam given the claimed 300lbs maximum weight.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Slightly crumpled
