Multiple alarmists with great results

I started my first panic by ordering a product with only ONE review, which I almost never do. But this device offered what I needed, so I took a chance. And I'm very glad I did. The ethernet connection speed on my old PC (running KDE Neon 5.13.1) suddenly dropped from 6 Mbps to just over 1. Some tests showed that outdated hardware was the culprit. component on the motherboard. My second fear came when the device arrived. A very attractive packaging was a blister that could be opened with bare hands. However, the quick install guide that came with it only had instructions for Windows and OS X. Uh, oh. A mini CD was included, and the Linux directory contained an amazing array of files, including PDFs and source code. Danger #3! I went back to the Revain page and found this paragraph: Comes with an expert email Linux support ticket for installing on the Linux OS listed above. Please email us at support@trend-tech.net.cn for assistance. Please let us know your operating system type and your order number by email. I received a quick response to my email with a PDF installation guide attached. I was happy to see that the guide was concise and very specific to Ubuntu/Debian systems. You run a command that installs the software needed to compile the driver, and then compiles and installs the driver. This procedure requires a wired internet connection, which can be a problem. A link will be provided to download the .deb file to another computer. However, they recommend not using this approach unless it is necessary. After asking, I connected the device and it was immediately recognized by the system. I turned off the computer, unplugged the ethernet cable, and rebooted. I used the KDE system settings to add a non-portable device. My "ideal result" is that I get download speeds above 6 Mbps again. Update: After using this device for a month, here are some additional observations. I have three Linux systems on separate partitions on my hard drive and the device runs on all of them: Linux Mint-XFCE, KDE neon and Lubuntu. Performing a major update involving the Linux kernel caused the device to lose connection. Help from TrendTech Support got me up and running again. I only had to run two commands: sudo dpkg-reconfigure rtl8812au-dkmssudo modprobe 8812au Today I did similar Linux Mint and KDE Neon upgrades. Correction was necessary for the first, but not for the second. I am still very happy with my purchase.
