This is the best filter I have ever had. The water tastes good, and when the flow slows down, it's time to clean the filter. You simply remove it and use a clean, abrasive sponge to scrub and rinse away any brown particles (probably organic debris) that have built up on the ceramic filter housing. Then put the filter back in place and let it run for a few minutes to rinse it out. The water still tastes great after cleaning, and the process can be repeated for many months to save money. I usually change the filter every 6-8 months so it's good value considering other filters on the market need to be changed a lot more often because they can't be cleaned. As a testament to the water quality, we use filtered water for our goldfish tank with no further treatment and the goldfish have been very happy for over a year. Goldfish are hardy fish so I don't recommend this for other species of fish, but the filter still seems to do a good job of removing chlorine and other contaminants. I don't understand the negative reviews, I have never had a problem with this filtration system and have had it for over 2 years now. Just don't drop the filter and don't over-tighten it and you'll be fine.
