Review on ๐Ÿšฒ Controltech Terminator MTB Bike Handlebar Bar End Extension Plug - 20mm Length, AC-63, ST1777 by Anil Campbell

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Good (updated) idea, bad execution. NO!

This looked like a decent easy solution to add some Onza barends to my retro rebuild GT LTS with Answer Pro Taper Carbon Riser, especially since ControlTech makes other excellent products. Inserting barends into these extensions was relatively easy after some "persuasion" with a flat-head screwdriver and the gratuitous use of a few select four-letter "set-amplifier" combinations. However, despite using Finish Line carbon paste, I could not get these handlebar extensions to stay securely in place even when rotating them out as far as possible. I even tried reversing the nut which, when tightened, pushes outward on the C-knurled parts that contact the inside of the handlebars, allowing me to get more outward force into the handlebars when tightened. Even this variation didn't hold them down and they still turned down onto the bar ends with the slightest pressure. Additionally, at normal/full body weight, they were almost COMPLETELY useless when flipping from side to side on the climb. I had them shipped abroad as I couldn't find them anywhere locally. I found several fakes but refused to buy them. Since I received them at a "good time" (thanks, COVID-19 virus motherfuckers!), I didn't have a chance to return them, so I'm stuck with over $30 worth of parts (foreign Revain s/h along with some other bike parts) that I can't use. And since bar ends aren't as common as they used to be or are built into many grips, I can't even sell them, let alone give them away. They are EXCELLENT QUALITY but unfortunately they just don't work. how they were meant. I do not recommend this product at all unless you are planning to build a garage MTB queen that does not use a real trail or road. If so, then they will work great for holding your barends on your display. Otherwise NO GO. I ended up buying a set of ONZA NOS handlebar extensions off eBay which work GREAT as the part that fits into the handlebar is AT LEAST 4-5 times longer than these ControlTech counterparts. This allows the external force of the more heavily grooved surface that comes in contact with the inside of the handlebar to be distributed more evenly and over a longer/wider area inside the handlebar, which again doesn't feel like I would the carbon fiber of break inside like this one ControlTech did.
