I've gone through a lot of monitors in my time and to be honest I've never been completely satisfied. I had a very expensive 27 inch screen that couldn't display deep blacks and bright whites at the same time and sometimes no matter how I calibrate, test etc I can't get them to look right. One problem, of course, is that what we think is right isn't necessarily right in reality, so that's another spur to work. I currently have a 2417 on the table next to mine. Dell 2412 difference - at first the 2412 was the clear winner but now I'm not sure - partly due to what I mentioned above but I'll get to that. The 2417 is nice to look at on the top, left and right, the contrast base with the charging pad also looks stylish and the whole design just works great. very sleek and exudes a premium feel There are plenty of connectivity options on the rear, although conspicuously missing a DVI-D or D-Sub port so you'll have to stay away unless you have HDMI or DisplayPort outputs. The menu controls are touch sensitive, which I really don't like. I prefer real buttons that I can see, feel and press, so it's a bit fiddly, but the menu system is pretty standard on Dell, going back to my old 2005 FPW. There are plenty of preset modes to choose from, but since I at least think i get accurate colors i usually choose default, color temperature or custom. Gamma out of the box looks pretty accurate. , at least with sites like Lagom, albeit perhaps a little lower. This is easy to fix. With other test screens, I can see the full range of black and white, which is nice. My 2412 has the same performance despite using panels from different manufacturers. However, banding is a little more common on this unit than on my slightly older 2412, but it's important to note that I haven't seen it anywhere other than the streak test. Screen. One interesting thing about this guy is that it comes factory calibrated using the sRGB setting in the menu. However, it seems to have been calibrated for 6000k and not 6500k, which is just odd. It does look pretty good out of the box though, even if they go up to 75 brightness, which is pretty nuclear. Sharpness is pretty good, and while the pixel size is slightly larger, I have no complaints about how text and graphics look. By far the biggest difference between the two monitors, however, lies in the overall screen display. With default settings and no adjustment, my 2412 looks stark white, the white of this 2417 appeared to be a slightly off-white tint - almost a warm yellow. This doesn't appear to be a temporary issue, but I'm also unable to enter it with custom colors. The gamma seems to be off, although I don't think so. Because of this, I was initially gravitated towards the 2412 and its whiter looks, but then I began to wonder if I was falling prey to some old trick that TV salespeople use to boost contrast, brightness and color to make things look bloody bright. although they obviously have little to do with the actual object on the screen. Think perfect (and believe me, I've tried - loading color profiles, adjusting settings, running all sorts of calibration tests) and just being honest about what I like. Spend time with each one individually (turn off the other to see what feels right. And I found that although I initially liked the look of my 2412, I print this on the 2417HJ. Once I get used to it had it seemed smoother and smoother to me.Also I've looked at a number of photos and videos on both screens and I have to say that for some reason the whiter 2412 seems more pleasing, this 2417 is definitely more natural and I I prefer to edit photos and watch movies on 2417. I have both on my desk and I really like the 1900 x 1200 2412 screen size, but when all is said and done if I had to hand one over I think I would would rather keep this guy. Plus it charges my phone. And a great choice that would definitely get five stars with better viewing angles and fewer bars. In this price bracket se it is still a great screen though. .
