Turns off after a few minutes

Just got this. I tried this the other day and today, first of all, the cable is very short and doesn't reach the rear window, which is what I wanted to use. until I can get my rear window defroster to work. Second, it turned off just a few minutes after turning it on. However, I think it's just overheating as the fan is working fine, but overheating in 5 minutes is ridiculous!
