Review on Sylvania Halogen Dimmable Medium Replacing Bulb: Efficient Lighting Solution by Nathan Hawkins

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good wattage, poor quality

I'm looking for dimmable chandelier bulbs that don't exceed the wattage requirements of wall dimmers (typically 400W), pushing for lower wattage bulbs in fixtures with more bulbs. I also want good light quality and sufficient brightness. I find CFLs unacceptable in these applications and was happy to find these halogen bulbs which are a perfect replacement for the 60w. They give off a nice white light, good brightness, good size, turn on instantly and are fully dimmable. Actually everything I was looking for. The power consumption is not as low as that of CFLs, but the difference in energy costs becomes smaller as the lamp wattage decreases. Since I dim them I expect them to last much longer than the full watt life stated on the packaging (applies to incandescent bulbs, probably not CFLs). HOWEVER, out of 8 boxes (2 packs, 16 bulbs), 4 bulbs didn't work. 25% bounce rate right out of the box. To me they were carefully wrapped in bubble wrap, although I don't know how they were handled at the factory. I can't remember the last time I found a blown lightbulb in a store, so I find this failure rate very unusual for a lightbulb. This worries me about the reliability of the 75% that lit up. Given the relatively high cost of these lamps, I have to try to replace them, which creates additional problems. Update: Notifications of problems to the manufacturer remained unanswered. Revain quickly replaced the blown bulbs in the first batch and then the blown bulbs in the new batch, but unfortunately each of the replacement boxes had a blown bulb. I gave up on getting a box of two good bulbs, so I returned the last box of dead bulbs on credit. All that caught fire are still working fine. So if they light up, everything seems fine. The only way to play this game is to buy at least 25% more lightbulbs than you need (including spares) and then plan to return any dead ones for a refund. We're sticking to the railroad Never heard from Sylvania again.
