After years of struggling with my Irwin Combo Square I finally got fed up with it. The twist screw to tighten the ruler on the handle "worked" but often I needed pliers to try to loosen the thing again because it was stuck and wouldn't unbuckle by hand. Knowing that I'm quite the curmudgeon and will never upgrade while Irwin is "working", I deftly smashed the thing in place with a hammer to free the ruler one last time and started, after a better quality combo square to search. I never thought I would use the term "butter smooth" to describe an instrument, but here we are. I'll leave the details to people who have left long reviews of this tool and seem to have forgotten more about combo squares than I will ever know. But I can tell you that the turning screw used to tighten the Starrett combination works with smooth precision and gives the ruler a satisfactory grip, speaking of a quality my Irwin could only jealously dream of. I'm happy to report that it comes off just as easily. My advice after years of heartbreak and grief: buy a Starrett. Life is too precious to waste lugging around a pair of multi-angle pliers.
