This is the best combo square I've ever had

Very high quality; absolutely as accurate as anything I need for woodworking; But what I like best are the markings on this square - they're ALL in English units, so I don't have empty space filled with centimeter scales on either side of the ruler. I don't mind the metric system, but when working with inches and fractions of an inch I'd like to be able to set the square on either side and easily see that it's set to the inch value I want. It's a bit pricey; and compared to Swanson's square…

Very Accurate Carpenter's Square

This square is well constructed and easy to read. I also have an old Stanley combination square of the same design, as well as a solid wood and brass square. Squareness is the same compared to the Stanley, but legibility of measurements goes to the Starrett. Also, the Starrett's swing clamp is sturdier and easier to operate when that makes sense. I feel like the improved Starrett design really makes up for the increased price (about $20 for the Stanley versus $100+ for the Starrett). Fair deal…

Top quality through reputation and use of tools

I am a hobby carpenter, but have invested a lot in tools in recent years. I have a nice 12 inch combination square from Miller's Falls, but I really need two since my work is split between my basement and garage, so I started shopping online. There are many combo squares for 50% less, but I thought having a Starrett to measure all my other squares would be smart and would serve me well for a very long time. Another thing is that they can be well cared for in the future selling for most of their

Have had my eye on this combo box for a long time. I have used 2 old Stanleys that I inherited from my grandfather and a newer Stanley that my kids gave me a few years ago. They work, but have quite a bit of slop and can be frustrating to set for very precise marks. Now that I finally got to Starrett, I wondered why I had waited so long. Yes, it's not cheap, but the quality and accuracy are remarkable. It is very easy to fine-tune, there is no play and the measuring marks are clearly visible…

This is what a great tool looks like

After years of struggling with my Irwin Combo Square I finally got fed up with it. The twist screw to tighten the ruler on the handle "worked" but often I needed pliers to try to loosen the thing again because it was stuck and wouldn't unbuckle by hand. Knowing that I'm quite the curmudgeon and will never upgrade while Irwin is "working", I deftly smashed the thing in place with a hammer to free the ruler one last time and started, after a better quality combo square to search. I never thought…
