My Ott Light is about 15 years old and I have never changed a lightbulb. A month ago it stopped working so I ordered a replacement. When I put in a new bulb, the bulb didn't work. I've tried several times = doesn't work. A lot of people online have had similar problems with changing bulbs and thought they needed to replace the ballasts. I went that route and called Ott. As the lamp is an older model, the new ballast will require the lamp to be rewired. I contacted a neighbor who said he could do it. Before I ordered a new ballast my neighbor decided to try to fix the lamp. Sent it back to me in five minutes - it works! Obviously one has a knack for fitting bulbs like this and my neighbor who is an electrician has a knack for it. His excitement saved me about $40 in new ballast and shipping. So if you're having trouble with a non-working lightbulb, it might just need a little tweaking. My old lamp lasted about 15 years. I hope so too, because the quality of the lighting was good.
