very low ink on inkjet printer ink

I've seen this complaint posted for a number of printers of different brands but I've never come across it myself. My HP printer ran out of ink in this tri-color cartridge NO TIME. So far the black cartridges seem to have a good lifespan. However, this is my second tricolor and ran out after just a few (very few) photos. I've invested enough in the printer and plan on using it for a while, but this is the first printer I'll "put out" before it breaks due to very bad cartridges.
