Review on ๐Ÿ”ฅ Enhanced MSR WhisperLite: Universal Canister and Liquid Fuel Stove by Tommy Almasri

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Damn cool. on seven

Ever since I was a kid camping with my dad I've wanted a whisper light. I finally have it and it's fantastic. However, this thing does much more than whisper to my father. It burns butane better than a butane stove - the butane you buy at sporting goods stores is expensive isobutane, which runs at lower temperatures than cheap n-butane. However, thanks to the preheating circuit of this stove, I have used n-butane at temperatures as low as 10ยฐF (-10ยฐC). Because n-butane has a lower vapor pressure, it requires a less durable canister and is therefore lighter overall per unit of energy you get from it. White gas has a significantly higher gross energy density than any form of butane due to its minimal containment requirements, and with the help of a secondary heat exchanger and proper use of the supplied heat reflectors you can achieve energy efficiencies in excess of 70%. that rival or even surpass those of furnaces, such as a blast pot. Also, white gas is CHEAP even compared to n-butane. One of the biggest complaints about Whispers is its inability to cook. True, it is not strong in it. But you can get it working by partially unscrewing the fuel bottle cap to release the pressure, screwing it back in, and keeping the pressure in the fuel bottle just high enough to keep the stove burning. Low heat isn't as efficient and leaves a small soot stain on the bottom of your pan, but it's actually not that bad and greatly expands your options for more refined backcountry dishes.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
