There was a bubble problem in the radiator expansion tank like the engine was hot. However, the temperature gauge showed a normal temperature. I replaced the thermostat but the problem persisted so I decided to replace the coolant sensor which solved the problem. Apparently, the sensor circuit works together with an additional electric cooling fan. If the coolant temperature rises above the set temperature, the auxiliary fan should turn on, but not if it gets a bad signal from the sensor. Anyway, this sensor works, was about $20 cheaper than the local auto parts store, and gave me peace of mind because I was concerned at first that my car had a blown head gasket.
