Stones work well. They are flat and smooth. I could sharpen all my knives on rocks. The soft Arkansas side is around 600 grit. The hard Arkansas side is around 1000 grit, which is a good combination. The box is two boxes glued together that don't connect or fit snugly to the stone so I have to use a rubber band to hold the setup together. The two stones have a small gap between them where they are glued together. Ugly, but doesn't affect work.
