All that came in the package was the front and back letter slot and screws. There was no template for cutting the hole, no instructions. I've searched the internet and found nothing there either. It took me an hour and a half to install. The rod holding the flap should go in the hole, but you have to be careful not to cut where the screws go and that the rod doesn't get very close to them. Also, the opening must be high enough that the back of the wing folds inward, or it won't open. I first cut it out of cardboard until I got it right and then used it as a template. It seems quite durable but with all that light around the flap and top (see pic) I'm worried it will let rain through. I have an enclosed porch and installed it on the siding next to the storm door. I'm just glad I didn't try to build it into a solid wood door.
