We have a dwarf hamster that is kept in a room that gets cold especially at night. I noticed he was trying to hibernate despite having many places with 4 inch bedding. So I started looking for ways to keep him warm. Somewhere on the internet someone recommended a reptile heating mat for this purpose. It had good reviews and I decided to give it a try. I bought a small one first and attached it to the side of the cage. This should be fine if the hamster lives in a glass aquarium, but for a wire cage. The mat does not radiate heat but serves to warm the hard surface to which it is attached. It heats up to 100F and above, but only if there's a hard surface next to it. So I have a medium sized mat under the plastic floor of the cage with a pin attached over the litter and a small one to the wire side of the cage with the plastic backing attached to the mat and a plastic hamster house that touches the wall which seems to indicate the temperature in the plastic house to increase by 5-7 degrees. It doesn't raise the temperature at the top of the paper bedding by more than a few degrees. Our hamster spends most of its time in the igloo downstairs or sometimes against the warm wall of the plastic house on the second floor. He hasn't fallen asleep yet. So it helps a little, but not enough to get you into all this trouble. I do not recommend these wire cage mats for hamsters. There has to be a better way to keep them warm.
