Review on Purolator PBL14461 PurolatorBOSS Premium Filter by Alex Tellekson

Optimistic about quality and filtration - not OEM size

I have been a long time Purolator oil filter buyer. I usually buy Purolator PureONE oil filters, but since I have a new 2017 WRX for myself I thought it would be a good idea to spend a few bucks more to get the better protection that synthetic carriers offer. If you want a detailed comparison of oil filters, MrSubaru has a good, albeit lengthy, video on Youtube about different manufacturers. However, I was disappointed to see that the oil filter sizes are significantly different compared to Subaru's OEM oil filter. This oil filter is narrower and slightly higher. At first I thought they sent me the wrong filter, but I checked the Purolator website to make sure it's the correct filter for the WRX engine. I was concerned that on newer Subaru engines, since the oil filter is mounted on top of the engine, it might be too high for the hood to close without damaging it. I did a few test fits with a sponge over the filter and tried gently closing the lid to see if it would rub. The good news is that it doesn't hit the hood, although it looks like it at first glance. I plan to add neodymium magnets to the oil filter for additional protection against wear on the engine.
