Review on Lignomat Mini-Ligno E/D Moisture Meter by Jarrett Love

Absolutely Basic Moisture Tester

I needed a moisture meter as part of a home renovation project but didn't want to spend a fortune or buy a cheap product that would give questionable results. I chose this item as a compromise and was not disappointed. The counter is very easy to use. Using the supplied wood species chart, set the gauge to the appropriate scale (2 or 3), insert the gauge probes and check the reading. That's all. It takes about 2 seconds to get a reading and you're on your way. I tested the device on fir, pine, cedar, oak, maple and walnut. While I couldn't tell if the gauge was 100% accurate as it was my only gauge, the readings were as expected (the cedar was freshly cut, the pine was stored outdoors and the rest was well seasoned indoors). The probes were very sharp and easily penetrated the wood in all places except walnut, which required a little more effort due to the hardness. The probes leave two small holes when penetrating wood, but the readings are more accurate and less expensive than the surface readers I considered before purchasing. My only recommendation is to go to the Lignomat website and check out the different models suited to your particular use. This E/D model is best for general purposes or woodwork around the home (testing lumber for furniture, firewood, frames, fences, etc.), but other options are better for construction work or when using our small stove. . Since all models are usually based on the same design, I'm sure they will all work just as well as this one.
