I bought this for fun. I've been looking for an outdoor insect repellent for a long time and decided to try this crazy thing. He claimed it was weatherproof and efficient. So far, so good. Torrential rain, hail and extreme heat didn't seem to cause any problems. It's basically a bare lightbulb on my front door, and it works fine. The LED light is very bright and has better visibility than our old light. If you want it to kill small bugs you have to turn it on so the lightning rod is only light. Turn the switch on and then off and on again so that only the purple light comes on. Judging by the number of dead insects, it works well. In the morning, when it seems like a bunch of creatures have joined their ancestors, I turn off the lights and spray from the nozzle on my hose. In the afternoon I turn the zapper back on. I assume it only attracts insects at night. If you leave the LED on overnight, the insects will notice and ignore the trap. It won't kill large flying insects, I haven't seen anything bigger than a mosquito in mine. We don't seem to have many bugs on our porch since using this light, but it's hard to quantify. We live in the country and in summer we are visited by many flying, crawling, walking and slippery creatures. Though I'm glad to know that getting in and out of the house after dark will save me a few bites. I hope the light endures the winter as well as our summer.
