Although I'm not a sharpener, I know a little about grinding and honing the edges of tools, mainly planers. In the past the rough grinding was done on a grinding wheel attached to my bench grinder/buffer which didn't do the job very well but ok. After that I smoothed the uneven edge with sandpaper and a water stone. I was tired of resharpening 80 grit paper, which required a lot of work, so I decided to try the DMT DuoSharp rough/very rough-sided bench. What a pleasant surprise. The very rough side stripped away the old metal and produced an excellent, properly angled surface in less time than my sander, and the rough side took the place of the 80 grit sandpaper twice as quickly. After the rough honing I went back to 120, 240, 800 and 1200 paper before using the waterstone, but any subsequent honing was much easier after creating the initial bevel with the DMT W250CXNB. It's a bit pricey, but worth it if you sharpen your tool frequently. You can spend extra money and get a stone holder, but it comes with a non-slip pad that works great, so the holder isn't really necessary. I was so impressed with this product that I recently purchased a next level DMT DuoSharp Fine/Extra Fine stone.
