Review on πŸ’Ύ WD 1TB Blue USB 3.0 My Passport Portable External Hard Drive (WDBYNN0010BBL-WESN) – Reliable and Spacious Storage Solution by Dan Brickley

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good size but has issues with Mac

Pros: Fast shipping, fun colors, and small, thin size Cons: Difficult to format and eject from Mac (details below) After formatting on Mac (once you plug it in, the ReadMe will tell you how to choose Mac or PC) it was in read-only mode so I couldn't save anything on it until I deleted its contents, which were just an introduction/manual and that Format changed/set drive to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with 1 partition. I watched a YouTube video on how to do it. I could then easily save data to it and copy from there. However, I've had several instances where it won't eject because the Mac says it's "in use" when all applications and files are closed. I'm nervous about the drive being damaged due to improper ejection as this has happened to me in the past with a Seagate 1.5TB external hard drive. Out of curiosity I connected it to a Windows PC and the PC said it "detected hardware" but couldn't access the content at all as it was formatted for Mac. Edit: I changed the format of the WD drive to "FAT" so now it ejects fine most of the time and can be used with both Macs and PCs. Sounds good right? It's an improvement for me since I have small files (documents, pictures, music), but FAT format can't store files larger than 4GB each (movies, games), so I don't recommend this solution to everyone , especially Mac users , as the WD drive needs to be formatted specifically for Mac in order to use Mac Time Machine backup feature. I need to see how this drive performs over time before deciding whether or not to recommend it.
