"My Model 28 Qwikee Steps made a loud bang while retracting, causing the engine to shut off. That part worked, and now the ladder extends and retracts silently. The old gear assembly had a gear with missing teeth that made a loud banging/clicking noise. The longest phase of the installation was pulling out the cotter pin and pin. Note: Do not reinstall the motor until the gear assembly and pin and cotter linkage are in place. Also, having a second person help hold the nuts in the gearbox assembly also makes this task a little easier.
