Review on πŸ“» Retevis RT27 Walkie Talkies: Rechargeable, Heavy-Duty Two-Way Radios for Adults - 5 Pack" by Vincent Pavelko

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great radios with good features if you are tech savvy.

These radios are great. They have plenty of channels and some nice features that offer limited privacy even in the shared frequency range. With a cable (yes buy one, you'll need it) and supporting software (from the retailer, very responsive) you can set a few options. These include battery saver/scan cycle intervals, voice prompt, and multiple options per channel including configurable DCS and/or voice scrambling (distortion). Remember that rock climbing has limits. This is less of an encryption and more of a reordering of the sample fragments (with an interval of 10ms?). This introduces a slight propagation delay, but makes conversations difficult to understand. However, if you speak slowly, you can still understand 80% of the words. Although it's better than nothing. On the hardware side, they are very durable, have a long range and good battery life. The charger is well constructed and can hold/charge the battery with or without the radio connected (allowing you to charge a spare on your own). The charger is self-limiting and intelligently recharges when needed if the radio remains active in the cradle. The only downside I found is that they have a VOX function. limited. Even at its highest level, the mic sometimes struggles to hear/hold compared to a PTT button enough to use reliably. It might work better with a headset, but it's not very functional with a built-in microphone. Overall this was the only downside I could find and given the price and all the other features this is a great buy for the money. UPDATE July 22nd: About a month later, these radios are still impressing. There are a couple of nice features that are unmarked (e.g. low battery voice alert) and scanning for open and scrambled DCS channels. Used on a 12 acre property with a large ravine and all sides were clearly audible. Including at the far ends and in canyons where even cell phone signals and other radios tend to drop and/or disappear. Very impressed with the clarity and strength in general. Battery life is also substantial, with standby times typically around 2 days.
