Review on ANNMETER AN-1800 Digital Infrared Thermometer - Handheld High Temperature Pyrometer Gun for Non-Contact Measuring (-58~3,272℉), 50:1 IR Laser Gauge for HVAC, Kiln, Cooking - NOT for Human Temperature by Raymond Iglesias

This pyrometer appears to register temperatures above actual temperature for a given emissivity. I tested this pyrometer at ambient temperature and 300 degrees Fahrenheit with another pyrometer that was calibrated and accurate. At ambient temperature, the error was about 10 degrees. At 300 degrees Fahrenheit, the error was about 40 degrees. I could not check the pyrometer over the entire range because my muffle furnace was not burning. Pyrometers are notoriously inaccurate. The biggest problem is usually the emissivity. This pyrometer was probably designed for an emissivity of 0.95, since the device resets to this after a battery change. However, reported higher temperatures suggest that the actual device is set to a different emissivity level. By lowering the emissivity by 10% with the mode button, I was able to set the correct temperature. However, the set emissivity was lower than the actual emissivity of the surface used in the test (rough porcelain surface). The information screen of this pyrometer is dark and unreadable in the sun. There are several errors in the manual. For example, page 2 refers to the "yellow trigger”. It's actually blue. A gloss finish with matte masking tape and matte black paint is also recommended. This does not work well with a very hot surface. What needs to be done is to set the emissivity equal to the surface emissivity before measuring the temperature. Most common emissivities can be found in the tables in the manual. There is also an abbreviated list of emissivities at the end of the instructions for use. The English language of the instructions is incorrect in places.
