Review on πŸ“Έ SVP PS4100: Portable Handheld Scanner for Color and Mono Scanning – 600DPI by Flocka Parsons

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good scanner worth the money.

I wanted something to scan books that a flatbed scanner can't do. I bought it not really expecting much but I was surprised. This is a very good scanner. It looks good and feels good. For books, this works well if you scan the page edge-to-edge rather than top-to-bottom. One side of the scanner is only about 1/4 inch wide, so you can get close to the spine of the book where the blank is and then scan to the other edge to get the entire page. The scanner needs a little training, but after a few days you should be able to use it well. Scans can be in PDF or JPG format. Although it has 3 dpi settings, 300 dpi seems to work well for plain text, plus you can scan faster when 300 . The scanner's preview screen is fine, but practically useless for scanning a book as it's so small you can't see anything on it. It zooms in but I don't use it. tried it on some photos but i have no doubt it will work perfectly. It comes with OCR software which sucks, there seems to be a lot of characters it doesn't recognize. I downloaded free OCR software but it wasn't much better. I found the website onlineocr.net, a free online OCR tool (you can upload 15 images per hour for free). At this point I just need to check the spelling on each page. Online OCR automatically detects and rotates your image to convert it correctly. There is another model from this brand that has a handheld scanner that connects to a desktop sheet feeder that I would buy if I knew the preview option wasn't needed. If you're looking for a high-resolution handheld scanner at a good price, you can't go wrong if you give it time to learn how to use it properly. The only real negative about it is that it runs on batteries ONLY, there is no AC adapter or any other place to plug it into. Depending on the type of batteries you put in (2 AA), it doesn't last long under heavy use. It also doesn't come with a micro SD card, so make sure you buy one.
