Looks like bits of yarn got stuck in various places in the ball on the factory floor.
I didn't like the knotted yarn. I pulled the yarn like you did but there were over 7 small pieces of yarn in it causing tangles. Each piece was 5 to 10 inches long. I often use red heart yarn and have not had this problem in the past.
