I ordered these MERV 12's because they were supposed to arrive before the fires. I usually buy MERV 13 filters to deal with smoky air. I thought MERV 12 should be almost as good as MERV 13 for stopping smoke. nope! Not even close. The AQI on the outside is around 220, and with two 2" MERV-12 filters blown through the oven for 48 hours, the AQI on the inside is around 160. So definitely better than nothing. However, a 1 inch MERV-13 filter in a similar house a few blocks away lowers the AQI to 20-40. Under normal conditions, these filters are great for removing dust and cleaning the air. Air. But when you have 500,000 acres burning around you and you need to get rid of the smoke a bit, this just isn't the filter for you. I ended up ordering a couple of 1" MERV 13s. These will be kept in a cabinet or possibly taped to a fan.
