Review on πŸ”Š Lepai LP-2020TI Mini Class D Stereo Amplifier with Power Supply - Enhanced Digital Hi-Fi Audio by Kyle Ross

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great amp, terrible (potentially dangerous) power supply.

Great little amplifier. I can easily connect many of my bookshelf speakers. The only ones that had problems were the Boston CR75 set, where the amp limited the volume to around 65%. I suspect it was a protection circuit because as soon as I turned the volume down the sound came back. Overall: Worth the cheap price if you just want a cheap amp that sounds good. Don't think this is a hidden gem for audiophiles at this price point. However: I give two stars for a cheap, cheap, cheap power supply. After the first day of use I started hearing a high pitched screeching. I traced it back to the included power adapter. Just to be clear: the power supply was connected to the over-voltage protection circuitry of my true sine battery pack. I unplugged it, drained it, and plugged it back in. The howling went away for a while, but then returned. I repeated the process of unplugging and letting it discharge, only this time when I plugged it back in I got a little flash of sparks. This was enough to convince me that the power supply should NOT be trusted. Unfortunately, buying an additional power supply turned out to be a hidden cost. The amp itself works great. I wish companies would stop packaging their products in cheap, flammable items that don't meet UL (or any other regulatory agency) requirements. You will likely find that returns of "defective" products will decrease.
