I purchased this unit to test the moisture content of finished hardwood floors in my home and subfloor. The pre-treated soil was well dried - it should have a moisture content of around 6%, maybe less. But this gauge hits the lower limit of 5% and will not give a reading or will fluctuate within that value, especially with hardwood. The counter works reliably on plywood floors and other pine woods, but not on kiln dried wood - that is too dry. I have access to oak and walnut wood that has been stored outside and the gauge worked well on them, reading 12-15%. New, undried lumber also showed the expected values. So this meter works, but be aware that it may not work very well at the very dry end of its range.
