I bought a sterling silver flute, a grade higher than the flute I started with. Flutes are expensive and the flautist will usually try several before making a choice. You can assume that any good flute has been played at least a few times before trying it out. In my case, I was left alone in a room with about $12,000 worth of three flutes to make my choice. I chose a flute, bought it, and when I got home I cleaned it thoroughly. I paid special attention to the lip plate, after which there were small grayish stripes that I could not remove. It was a tarnish most people wouldn't notice, and after a week of cleaning it was still there. No, I haven't spent all my time cleaning it, but when you put a good tool away, ALWAYS clean it. Uncleaned wind instruments soon become unusable (ask me how I know), and the drill is this: wipe down the barrel with a swab. Wipe away fingerprints and sebum with a clean cloth, leave the case open for a few minutes, then put it away. Unpleasant gray streaks have not disappeared even after a few weeks! Like I said, few people noticed them, but they bothered me. I read an ad for metal polishes. I avoided anything that didn't have the word silver in it. In the end I settled on Hagerty's silver polish. It looks like it was an actual polish, not something that works with chemical magic like a dip. It said it would leave a protective coating, but I figured I could remove the coating if I cleaned it with alcohol immediately after buffing before it dries. Great success! The gray lines are gone. The lip plate shone like a brand new coin, and my regular cleaning routine kept it that way. Two clues said "shake well before use," meaning there was polishing compound, not chemicals, and the pink color told me the mixture contained blush. I used rouge to polish telescope mirrors and was pleased Hagerty used it in their polish. polishing cloth mt. The results were everything I could have wished for. A drop or two for my needs and maybe a few ounces for yours, it's a real polish and whether you like the protective coating or prefer to remove it I think you'll be happy with this stuff.
