There were several scanners of this type to choose from and I chose this one based on the price and good reviews. This requires an SD card, so included in the price. A small SD card is sufficient since you want to transfer the files to your computer. The system works as follows: place the scan bar on top of the paper and then manually scroll the scanner to the bottom of the paper. This can be difficult if the page slips. The scan will be distorted if the scanner is dragged unevenly. There are multiple settings for dpi, pdf or jpeg as well as black and white or color. I usually only create color PDFs. The scans I took were documents, checks to be cashed online, maps and pages from a travel guide. The scan won't be perfect unless you have a firmer hand than mine. They all tend to tilt to one side because I'm not pulling the scan bar straight down. However, scans are sufficient for my purposes. Cashing a check is difficult and expensive in Europe. If you have a US bank, you can usually send a scan of a signed check over the internet. Even with slight distortions caused by the deflection of the scan belt, the banks find the scans acceptable. However, it may take several attempts to scan. It's best to have two people, one to move the scan bar and the other to hold the bottom and then the top of the check to keep it from slipping. I was on a hiking trail but didn't want to take a large map with me. It was very convenient to scan a piece of the map I was walking on. Simply place the scanner in the center of the map and drag down to cover the area of interest. I was asked if the scan would be longer than 11 inches but I haven't tried and don't know. The scan time is not specified anywhere, except that an alarm will go off if the scan is too fast. At first I worked slowly, like a mechanical scanner, say five to ten seconds per side. I later found that I could scan a page in a second or two. I've never had a "too quick" alarm. I don't think you need this to scan photos, it's too easy to distort. Maybe with a little practice it's possible. However, it seems like the IRS always has some type of document they want you to submit at the worst possible moment, and this scanner will make the FBI happy, and that's enough! Advantages: small, cheap, handy in an emergency. Cons: Inconvenient to use, especially on receipts.
