my kids have had these only a short time. we dealt with the smell, just by washing with soap a number of times after leaving them out of the package for some days, as the smell still lingered, so we tried the soaping approach.there's a circle on each one that seals in whatever the inside contents are. unfortunately, that circle is not secured to last. that's unfortunate that the circle easily breaks, and you can expect a mess if you're not having a close watch on the kids with these. unfortunately, one of the balls leaked and stained one of our literary books.so, they look good, and are fun to play with, but the initial con should be solved and the durability con needs very much to be solved.
