Professional look and effective heat reduction

HOW IT LOOKS We were looking for a shade that was non-reflective (non-specular) on the outside and dark enough to block out the hot afternoon sun in a south-facing garden window. - West side of our house. Viewed from the outside, this shade is reflective, but not silvery. It's more like a mirrored bronze finish. Viewed from the outside, the tint makes it difficult to see anything in the bright sun. I would say it offers complete privacy in normal daylight and minimal privacy at night when the room is bright. Viewed from inside the house in natural daylight, it's like wearing a good pair of sunglasses. It looks even darker on rainy days. INSTALLATION This is a two person job. I've included a photo of the tools we used. You will need a small bottle of baby shampoo and a good soap dispenser. It's just as good as any pre-mixed grout you can buy, which really isn't necessary if you're making your own. Keeping the glass and foil moist is critical to the success of this project. Our film came with a good utility knife and a palm-sized plastic scraper, which proved essential! It has a felt edge that slides easily over the surface of the slide and is just the right size to fit along edges and into tight corners. The biggest problem with hanging the film was separating the clear backing from the film. It is mostly invisible on the back of the film and almost undetectable. This backing needs to be removed to reveal the adhesive, so we folded a tiny corner of the film several times to release the clear backing. The instructions recommend using 2 pieces of tape to separate the backing and film, but regular tape won't hold. Just gently hold the foil with your fingertips and peel off the corner. We trimmed the length of the film by an extra inch when measuring it. Even if you have to stretch the corner, there's enough left over to trim it. Just make sure the glass is very clean before you start. Anything stuck to the back of the film stays there. The good news is that small dirt (e.g. hair, fluff) is not visible. What struck me was that the film was thick enough not to tear when you applied it to the glass and squeezed the bubbles out. Helpful Tip: Wrap a beach towel around your work space to catch soap spills on the floor. HEAT REDUCTION We noticed the difference right away. The room is definitely getting cooler. Heat reduction was our main reason for purchasing this shade. We added cell curtains to increase heat reduction in the room. UPDATE: We've had the tint for about 6 weeks now and love it. It definitely reduces light and cuts off heat.
