I have a pretty good audio system. And, taking a page from the book of my digital streamer, which uses better copper-to-light conversion devices, I felt the need to see what these fairly inexpensive devices could do. So I installed one right after my (cheap) ethernet switch and the others next to the Nvidia ShieldTV Pro (about 6-7 feet). I bought a 3m optical link cable and hooked everything up. To my surprise, the video was SHARP. Even PlutoTV's crappy show looked almost 4k quality. But the biggest difference was in the sound. Yes it is lossy and even 2ch PCM is common, but let me tell you it's 100% better. The "chest" resonance/distortion when turning on the lossy DD+ in many programs is almost gone. It's clean and sounds louder and louder. Imagination/Phasing is even more dramatic. I like to get up early in the morning and have a cup of coffee. I watch PlutoTV and as anyone who uses this app a lot knows how many times you see the same commercials over and over again. The difference for me in the mornings is that I just turn on my multi-channel amplifier, which feeds my center, surround, and surround speakers. My main amp stays off as it sucks a lot of juice (Ayre Acoustics). I usually scroll through my phone or tablet looking for news, events or whatever, but today a simple ad really blew me away. The sound is usually almost completely crammed into the center speaker, and it is fed slightly to the left/right in the back. The scene on camera was actually front and center. But his wife is speaking from another room, which usually comes only from the central channel. Today her voice was far, far behind me. No sound of her voice came through my center speaker and it really surprised me as I had heard this commercial many times before. Not only was she ONLY ringed, she was out of phase so her tone sounded like she was about 15 feet behind me. It was Eri, to say the least! I was watching Dolby Atmos stuff with all the speakers last night and it was just as amazing. My Atmos speakers really enjoyed the workouts from streaming. Room placement was close to my Oppo UDP-205 player with Atmos or DTS:X movie playback. My NAS is almost ready and I will copy my 500-600 Blu-ray/4k movies to it. I can only imagine the benefit of lossless audio! Now for the theories as to why this improved things, I don't really have any. I'm no scientist, but when I bought an audio streamer and it got rid of all the noise and distortion (usually in the form of volume, bloat, and harshness) from my copper ethernet on my home network, I knew I had to at least try should fiber. Optics on my video streamer. My question is how does fiber clean up a dirty (noisy) signal? It doesn't filter out anything what i know Or, because the fiber runs at such a high frequency, can the fiber somehow bypass RF or EMI during the conversion process? But then again, this is filtering. I dont know. I still have a lot to learn, but I know what I see and hear. And I had a great many hours with my gear before adding fiber optic ethernet. The difference is just amazing. And I haven't found anything about this concept (use in HT applications) on the web. I say try. If you don't see or hear a difference, simply return the items and continue. what I see and hear. And I had a great many hours with my gear before adding fiber optic ethernet.
